Katherine Marie Helmond was an American actress who lived from July 5, 1929, through February 23, 2019. Helmond was well known for her co-starring role as Mona Robinson on Who’s the Boss? (1984–1992) and her lead role as ditzy matriarch Jessica Tate on the sitcom Soap (1977–1981) during her five decades on television.

On Coach, she played Doris Sherman; on Everybody Loves Raymond, she played Lois Whelan (the mother of Debra Barone). She also appeared on variety shows as a guest. Terry Gilliam’s Brazil (1985) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Family Plot (1976) Overboard all featured Helmond in supporting roles (1987). Between 2006 and 2017, she also voiced Lizzie in the Disney/Cars Pixar film franchise.

In 1955, Helmond moved to New York City after making her stage debut in As You Like It. She went on to run a summer theatre in the Catskills for three seasons and taught acting in university theatre programs.
