Tim McCarver was an American professional baseball player in Major League Baseball as a catcher from 1959 to 1980. He also had another career as a television sports commentator. Tim McCarver Biography
McCarver was born on October 16, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was an exceptional baseball player in his youth and was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as a catcher at the age of 17. He made his Major League debut in 1959 and played for several teams over the course of his career, including the Cardinals, Phillies, Expos, and Red Sox. McCarver was a two-time All-Star and won two World Series championships with the Cardinals in 1964 and 1967.
After retiring from playing in 1980, McCarver transitioned to broadcasting. He started as a colour commentator for the Philadelphia Phillies and then moved on to work for ABC, CBS, and Fox. Tim was the lead analyst for Fox’s coverage of the World Series for 19 seasons, from 1996 to 2014. He also worked as a broadcaster for the New York Mets from 1983 to 1998 and for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2014 to 2018.
Throughout his broadcasting career, McCarver was known for his ability to break down complex baseball plays and strategies in a way that was easy for viewers to understand. He was also famous for his catchphrases, including “excuse me” and “I’ll tell you what.” McCarver’s enthusiasm for the game was infectious, and he was widely regarded as one of the best analysts in the business.
McCarver’s broadcasting career was filled with memorable moments. He called the play-by-play for the infamous “Bartman Game” in the 2003 National League Championship Series, in which a fan interfered with a foul ball, contributing to the Cubs’ loss to the Marlins. He also provided analysis for numerous iconic World Series moments, including Kirk Gibson’s walk-off home run in 1988, Joe Carter’s series-winning home run in 1993, and David Freese’s game-winning home run in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series.
McCarver received numerous honours and awards throughout his career. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012 as a recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence. He also won four Sports Emmy Awards for his work as a baseball analyst.
In addition to his work in broadcasting, McCarver was also involved in various charitable organizations. He established the Tim McCarver Foundation in 1998, which provides funds for educational and athletic opportunities for underprivileged children. He was also a longtime advocate for ALS research and participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014.
McCarver died of heart failure in Memphis, Tennessee on February 16, 2023. He died at the age of 81.
